Your Redesign Opportunity.
A few months ago, the FDA announced a new Nutrition Facts label for packaged foods. In other words, every packaging with a nutrition label is expected to adhere to the new standards. Now, this may sound like a nuisance, but let us explain just for a moment why this can be an exciting new opportunity for you.
The principle difference between the new and old FDA labels is a clearer and bolder design. The idea was to create a design that reflected new scientific information. This new design makes it easier for consumers to make better informed food choices, including links between diets and chronic diseases. All of the figures related to calories, serving sizes, and ingredients is organized and illustrated in a way that is easier, and more pleasing to read.
Now what does all of this have to do with you? In so many words, you don’t want to be showed up by an FDA label. If your current packaging design looks a little cluttered, or your imagery has become a little dated, the new FDA label won’t do you any favors in contrast. To use a sports analogy, it would be like acquiring an awesome center for your basketball team, but your point guard is a tad too old to cut through the screens and give the big man the ball. Okay, maybe that analogy is a bit of a stretch, but it’s true that dated packaging designs won’t hold up well against a new and improved FDA label.
This is where the opportunity comes in. In order to adhere to the FDA standard, you’ll be expected to implement the new design and print a whole slew of new packaging. Instead of printing your old design, why not take advantage of the opportunity to update? Studies have shown that a third of the consumer decision-making process is based on packaging design. Make sure that you’ve got that third covered, and consider following the FDA’s example by creating a bolder, clearer packaging design.
